This rifle is just my style and has a lot going for it. I love the configuration, love the sights, the matted barrel, no rear sight seat, the fact the sights (and everything else) letters. What has me perplexed is what the, “Target” notation in the letter means?
One comment I have is the seller claims it has a 3/4 magazine. First of all, it letters with a 1/2 magazine. Secondly, if you just look at it, you can see that given the takedown lever, there is no possible way that magazine could be any shorter than it sits.
Another comment I have is the barrel matting looks odd to me. It looks like it was laid down in two rows. I can’t recall seeing that before?
That would be the gun was shot at a target but all of the 73’s that have the target remark has the grouping of the shots. It would see target from 1/2″ to 9″ I have seen on 73’s.

Steve,
The knurled matting was applied in multiple passes due to the round barrel contour, which is why it looks like it does. it looks good to me.
Bob is correct on the “Target” notation. I have seen it frequently in the single Shot records, usually with a distance noted as well (e.g. 100-yds or 200-yds). In other cases the ledger records will also state “Target sent”.

Bob and Bert –
I appreciate the comments. It would be nice if there was more information about the outcome of shooting the target.
I’m thinking this one would really fit Tom’s (Old Cranky) collection of 86’s. It would be great paired with the Deluxe pistol grip takedown he recently acquired. Also, with the matted barrel, it would be nice sitting next to his matted barreled .45-90

Done on all or only by special request? The nine-incher should have gone back for a brl replacement, or something!

Steve , you know me to well, that gun would fit nicely in between those two and the deluxe elw in 45-70 I already have. Love the matte barrel and letters as “no rear seat”. Little outside of my price range right now tho.

They were probably done on request starting at serial 12 and ending around 1700. There are groups of guns targeted early on and towards the end they were few and far between. I have come across some later but not many. One said target 50 yards point blank and another said Target 100 & 200 yards. It could be when they just said target they wanted the gun sighted in.
