Hi. Newbie here. I have a few questions about my newly acquired model 94. This is my first 94 and I’d like to get to know about it. It is a 32WS, 20″ barrel, serrated buttplate, type 6 tang markings, tang is not d&t, “W” stamped on bottom of receiver, “85” stamped in front of trigger, ramped front sight, Lyman #38 rear sight, smooth delete block installed in place of rear sight, serial number 1225835. Any info on this rifle will be greatly appreciated.

I’m wondering if the Lyman 38 sight was factory installed? Date of manufacture? Etc.

I got this rifle from a couple who just recently had a brother pass. They had no idea what they had. They had a manual with it for an old Winchester model 190 and 290. So they had it listed as “Semi automatic rifle”. The wife told me that they talked to a gun dealer about what it was worth and he told them not much. However, I think she may have talked to him over the phone and described the rifle as a model 190 or 290 due to the fact that they had the manual for that rifle, because she was only asking $175 for this rifle!! I know….unbelievable! I even screenshot the ad just so I had proof of the deal I got when I tell my buddies.

That serial number is from 1940.  The Lyman 38 was offered as a sight option into the 50s.  I’ve  not seen it on a gun as late as 1940.  But, it is possible according to the Stroebel book.

A close examination of the holes could help determine whether it came from the factory.  Is there any sign that a sight has been in the rear dovetail on the barrel?

I would think the odds are against it being installed at the factory. But possible

Model 94 S/N 1225835 was manufactured in April 1940, and the upper tang is indeed drilled & tapped for mounting a tang sight.

The Lyman No. 38 receiver sight is highly unlikely to be factory original.

Highly unlikely, but it’s such a GREAT sight that I’d be glad it was there, if the rifle was mine.

I agree completely.  I absolutely love this sight – particularly on a carbine.
