Hello Jeff,
Model “1894” S/N 40740 was actually manufactured in late April, 1898.
The value of the rifle is highly dependent on a lot of as of now, unknown variables, e.g.
1. Caliber
2. Barrel length
3. Barrel contour (octagon, half-octagon, or round
4. Frame type (Solid frame or Take Down)
5. Magazine length
6. Butt stock configuration (straight grip or pistol grip)
7. Stock (wood) grade (plain, 1X, 2X, 3X)
8. Sights
9. Bore condition
10. Graded condition of the exterior of the rifle (steel & wood)
The possible value numbers are much broader than what you were told.

My mother bought the rifle in 1960 for $50, and it’s been stored in her closet in a rifle case ever since (not fired). I’ve spoken to a couple of brokers, and gotten estimates from $1500-$6000. S/N 40740. What’s a real number?
(I’d post some pics, but not sure how)
You can send photos to me at [email protected] and I will happily attache them to this thread.
