I would assume its the engraver marks but as to who. If you show the engraving it might help to identify the engraver.

Otherwise send some good photos to Pauline and she might be able to recognize the engraver is its a mainstream engraver.

Pauline didn’t recognize it , similar to one , but not exactly . Will be an early 1905-10 engraver of some descript lol . Rifle is 1905. Returned for some ” job ” or repair 1908 
Pauline is fairly sharp when it comes to engraving so if she can’t ID it I don’t know who to try next. There were a lot of engravers around in that time period. The sign mark is not very clear to try to make out what it is. If you decipher the mark or initials you might have a chance.

Those are not “engraver’s” initials. Instead, they are an inspector’s stamp.

The location you mention, is the normal location for an inspectors stamp. Can you post a clear picture of it?

The new picture shows thats its definitely cut not stamped. It almost looks fresh cut.

Hmmm… it does look like a fresh cut (engraved) marking. I do not recognize it.
