Hi there,

I’m looking to have my rifle appraised. It’s a four-digit serial number Winchester Model 94 chambered in .38-55, manufactured in either 1894 or 1895.

Could you please advise where I can have it professionally appraised? My next step will be obtaining the Cody documentation for the rifle.

Thank you in advance!

The serial number will tell us precisely when it was manufactured, and if it is potentially a First Model or a Second Model (big difference in the potential value).

With a set of clear detailed pictures, I can give you a relatively close value estimate. If you are in (or near) the Pacific Northwest, I can appraise it in hand.

You have a Second Model receiver with a serial number that places it in 1895. My guess would be an April birth date. Bert will be able to confirm.

If you don’t know about the different models and other history of the 1894’s this is a great resource…

Otherwise a very beautiful rifle from what I see. Especially given it’s 130 years old.

It is a Second Model rifle, and it was manufactured in August of the year 1895.  It is a standard Model 1894 Sporting Rifle, and it is original with the exception of the barrel mounted rear sight.  I suspect that the original rear sight was removed (and subsequently lost) when the Lyman No. 1 tang sight was installed, and that somebody at a later time installed the No. 22 series Flat-top sight with a #1 series thumbprint elevator.

The original (correct) rear sight was a No. 26 series and it looked like this;

Overall, it is a very nice early production Model 1894 rifle.  The condition of the bore will be a factor in the value.

You could talk with Turnbull Restorations about an appraisal.

They are in New York.

If the bore is respectable and the tang sight is not hiding an extra tapped hole, It is a $2500-2700 rifle.

Bore seems in good shape considering it was probably cleaned decades ago.

With a clean shootable bore, and the tang sight, the value of your rifle is approximately $3,000. The fact that it is a bona fide “antique” and a 38-55 are both positive influences on the collector value.
