Ron W;
I’m happy you like your 1876, your’s also sounds like a very nice rifle. My ’76 is British proofed with a fairly heavy 22″ round barrel, a Tang sight that came with this rifle, but not the normal Marbles or whom ever, it’s different and hard to describe. A Winchester 4 leaf Express Rear sight. The front sight, I put on a good number of years ago. It’s one of the rarest if not the rarest Winchester front sights that the company ever manufactured. You’ll find it listed in the 1882-83 Winchester catalog. It’s called the Winchester Reversable Sight. It seems I’ve the only one yet found, although there must be a few more scattered around the world somewhere. As with all my Winchesters, I also have the original Winchester Loading Tool and Bullet Mold for this 40-60WCF. I haven’t fired this 40-60 as of yet. I instead like to shoot my 3 Mauser rifles. 2 early Mauser Sporting Rifles,( “B’s”) .318 caliber 8×57’s, 1 Mauser converted military rifle, an 1895 in 7x57m/m. Of course my first love are my Winchesters, of which I’ve only a few left in my collection. I sold off the majority at auction a few years ago. The Model 1873 was always my favorite. I have 3 left. A “Lettered” and documented 32-20WCF “Smoothbore”. 1 of 2 researched and listed both in the official Winchester Ledgers and in Jim Gorden’s books on the 1873’s. A 32-20 with a 26″ octagon barrel, very poor bore, but very nice custom engraving. My favorite ’73 was the second Winchester I ever owned. A 24 inch, Octagon Barreled 44-40WCF, 2X Fancy Checkered Stock, Set Trigger, Beech’s Gold Washed Front sight. An added Mid-Range Vernier Tang rear sight. Lettered “One of One Thousand”. This one stays with me until my end. I left my Wife these instructions, as did the Outlaw/Sheriff Brown before he was hanged/shot. “Sell everything, but keep the Winchester”!

Apache would like to see a picture of that 1876 Winchester and the special sights. All I can say about your description of your Winchesters , is WOW! . Its folks like you that makes this Winchester collecting and shooting interesting . I will try and post a photograph of my old Winchester 1876 40/60 wcf and the tools . The 1866 Carbine is still in the NRA Museum. I figure it’s better in their museum where anyone interested enough to make the effort can see it, than it would be in my vault where only I can see it. Another plus for interested Collectors or Historians, they can get copies of my research article from the Whittington. In any case I’m beginning to think this Winchester is cursed. Anyone that owned it has had nothing but what I would consider bad luck and “Misadventure” while this carbine was in their care. The first 2 or 3 guys ended up dead. I as of yet been unable to sell it in a, what I consider a “timely Manner”. Of course, price I’m sure is a factor, as “It ain’t cheep”, but considering what it is, it shouldn’t be. I’ve given up on the Jaguar XK-8’s, beautiful cars, YES, to much at this point in my life to maintain, also yes. I’ll stick to my ’77 Vette. This is a car I’ve owned for about 24years, have had it apart more times than I can remember, and still get a thrill every time I take it out. The sound of those “Side Pipes”, music to my deaf ears.

The front “Winchester Reversable Sight” is pictured on another “Thread” under “Winchester Sights. If I remember correctly the heading of my thread is “A Most Unusual Combination Sight”. Anyway, check out “Winchester Sights” on this forum, look for a photo from the 1882-83 Catalog showing the sight, posted by “73Man”. I’ll in the meantime try to get some photos of the ’76, and post it on this sight.

I can’t download my photos on this sight. If interested in photos of the Win. Reverseable Front Sight send me your e-mail address and I’ll get them out to you.

Larry,
You most likely need to compress the size of your pictures to get them to post properly. What error message are you getting when you try posting them now?

Apache , I had a look at the reversible sight. That is nice. Does it have a spring to hold it in place while swiveling? You got me fired-up on my 40/60 rifle , think I will burn a bit of Bp. today in it. Never get tired of shooting that little 40/60 , it is scary accurate. Will try and send you my E-mail. Bert;
The truth of the matter is I haven’t a clue on how to download photos onto the Winchester Sight. My computer is a MAC Book, most of the sights on the Internet use the Microsoft System. (different system) When I open the WACA sight on my machine there’s actually no “Icon” that indicates “Download Photos” that I can find. Granted, I’m an “Old Fart” when it comes to this, but with some help maybe I can get some photos of my remaining Winchester firearms on the Winchester Forum. I always collected the “Unusual” with a “history” rather than “Closet Queens” that looked as though they never saw the light of day, much less having been used as was intended. My feeling on “Immaculate Condition” has always been, “If you want a new gun, go out and buy one”! However if you want some of the feeling of “The Taming of the West” that most of us “Romantics” seem to crave, a Winchester with “character” (USE) is what’s called for. Just my personal feeling on the subject.

Apache:
I know nothing about Mac’s but I believe you should be getting the same view of a thread as we Window users get when opening the WACA site. If so, you will only see the option to upload photos when you start a response to a post or start your new thread.
It should look like the attached graphic – look for the “Upload Attachments” in the lower left, just above the Smileys.

Bert;
I really would be grateful if you could do that. I had a Dell in years past, knew how to use the Microsoft System, downloaded hundreds of photos of my collection. I, unfortuneately also downloaded many a “Virus” in spite of numerous “Firewalls”. I eventually got tired of this and bought a MAC. I should have used the ’76 Winchester in 40-60 and tried to see how potent it was against the Dell.
Thank you again, Larry N. (Apache)
