The screw push the surface of the TD matting surface out from the back side there by increasing the thickness at those points. You just tighten the screws a little at a time until it comes snug at the right point.

If its been peened and your going to file it you might run into a problem with not being able to get it to tighten up. The tightening screws can only take up so much play. Has the screws been tightened before? Can you see bulging where the screws are?

If you see wear marks, then it has been tightened already but you don’t know how much. The screws dimple the TD surface so if its been tightened already and you run a file across there you are taking metal off where you need it. Can you post a picture it it?

The only time I had that happen is if I try to close the action before the barrel is lined up. If the extractor is engaged into the cut of the barrel and the bolt face it hitting the barrel you have a head space issue.
