I just purchased a 1892 takedown, that is loose.  How does the 3 screws work?

Oscar,

The screw push the surface of the TD matting surface out from the back side there by increasing the thickness at those points. You just tighten the screws a little at a time until it comes snug at the right point.

Thanks – I thought that is how it worked.  My part has been loose for a long time, it is peaned together. I will draw file the surface so that it separates.

If its been peened and your going to file it you might run into a problem with not being able to get it to tighten up. The tightening screws can only take up so much play. Has the screws been tightened before? Can you see bulging where the screws are?

There is a slight mark where the screws are.  I thought this slid apart, do the screws only bend or force the metal to dimple?

If you see wear marks, then it has been tightened already but you don’t know how much. The screws dimple the TD surface so if its been tightened already and you run a file across there you are taking metal off where you need it. Can you post a picture it it?

I tourqed the screws and they did dimple more.  Shootable but not real snug.  But now I can not get the receiver shut. I opened it before I took the front off.15

Hello Oscar,

Can I add your rifle into my survey of the 1892 rifles?

The only time I had that happen is if I try to close the action before the barrel is lined up. If the extractor is engaged into the cut of the barrel and the bolt face it hitting the barrel you have a head space issue.
