Hi folks,

I am doing a research on the historical references of the Model 1886. In every article or ad on the 1886 you can read that it was praized by everyone when hitting the market, but what I am looking for is real “footage”, articles in old magazines and remarks of contemporary users, just like Buffalo Bill’s testimony on the 1873 in his letter to Winchester. Anyone who can help me ? Thanks a lot! Best regards, Felix

Have you tried looking through old magazines like the American Rifleman. The magazine was first published as “The Rifle” in 1885. It later changed to “Shooting and Fishing” in 1888. The name officially became “The American Rifleman” in 1923. So period articles while the Model 86 likely could be found there.

I’d have to go back and research specifics, but recall seeing plenty of articles about various Winchester Models and/or cartridges in these magazines.

In the Winchester catalogs there are testimonials from customers that they would publish.

Normally the testimonials in the WRACo catalogs are fairly short, one to two paragraphs at most and are of high praise towards Winchester products.

A lot of period literature from the late 1800s and early 1900s has been digitized in PDF format. If you can find these digitized versions of the various magazines that pertain to shooting, firearms, and the outdoor life style of that era they usually are searchable. These would likely be fruitful towards trying to find specific “of the period” or the “footage” that you’re looking for. The problem is taking the time and researching them to find a specific article about the Model 1886.

I’ve found that often simply searching the word “Winchester” to be fruitful when researching Reloading. But I don’t have all the free time in the world to find such specific articles.

But as an example here are several pieces that pertain to the topic of “Winchester” in various period magazines.

In reality I would imagine you could go down a long deep rabbit hole trying to find exactly what you are looking for. I’m reminded of the various articles & books written by Townsend Whelen that usually get down to the brass tacks.

A lot of modern gun writers are simply Shills for the latest greatest new cartridge or model firearm. Rarely is anything very critical in my opinion.

Sincerely,

Maverick

P.S. Best of luck in your endeavors!

Charles Newton makes some comments about the strength of the Model 1886 Winchester in his, “The Bolt vs. The Lever Action” article:
