A local estate has a Henry rifle for sale, #4036. Lots of nice barrel blue, excellent markings, real nice wood, real case color on lever and hammer. $20K and negotiable. I would like to have it, but know all of the problems with Henrys, although this one looks real good. Unfortunately the owner went on to his just reward, and there is no provenance. Does anyone know of a registry of sorts of known Henrys? Another one is coming available from the same estate serial in the 1000s.
No list that I have seen. There are 3 books on Henry’s and each shows some pictures with the serial numbers. Other than condition the one factor to look for is the color of the brass. If it has been polished that can really hurt the price. Should be an old dark mustard like color. Do you know the name of the family? Pictures would really help evaluate the gun. The earlier gun could have more value.
The brass does have that great aged patina, and wood has that 150 year old look. The blue is dark, about 40%, with even silverish wear where it was rubbed in a scabbard or something. Looks just right. Perfect sharp barrel marking. It is in the Reno area, my friend is selling the guns for the wife, I do not want to say the name, that may not be appropriate, but I have never heard of him. Provenance is very important with these expensive guns, as you all know. With U.S. Colt SAAs people almost always demand a Kopec letter. I know some masters have made fake Henrys in the past. Those guns are out there, and one experienced Henry collector told me years ago that those guns would fool all but the most experienced. He even told me that he may have been fooled and did not know it. I will get some pictures, but unfortunately only a hands on would really reveal anything. I was hoping the serial number would show up somewhere. Without some provenance or serial number reference, this may be a tough local sell.

Looks like a “J”. A. Ryan to me.
Sincerely,
Maverick

I have a old list of 3500 Henry’s and 4036 is not in there. I have 4030 and 4040. I checked Springfield research and its not listed.

Thank you for checking. I wish the owner had made some notes, but his wife has no information on his collection. When he bought it and from whom would help.
Thanks guys for the help. I was thinking J A as well. Guns not going anywhere soon but someday my wife or daughter may ship it.
Bob, do you have info on 5544?
Wolfbait, I have never seen a repo Henry. (Well actually I have seen a repo cutaway, stocks, sights and barrels). I was only asking the name to see if anyone recognizes it. Provenance can be a great help but most Henry’s have none. There is no such thing as a Factory Letter for a Henry.
Pictures will really help. Take a lot and get every piece, angle and the stamps. If it has swivels, show these and look for the Henry bump.

Can’t figure out how to add pictures here.
If you wish, you can send the pictures to me at [email protected] and I will post them for you. Sorry, I just realized that I misspelled your name Peter.
