I found an old model 94 in my LGS. Serial number in the 96x,xxx range which seems to put it in about 1924 for a manufacture year and its in 30 wcf. It has a 20″ barrel but is not a SRC and has no hole for it yet it doesn’t look like an Eastern Carbine either. It has the carbine type front sight and the forearm seems to be the carbine type as well.
But the stock does NOT have the scalloped type butt with the metal plate, it is more flat with a plastic or bakelite type black butt plate. It reminds me of the one on my Marlin 39A from the 50s. The stock is also not the straight stock, but it has the sculpted area behind the wrist. It is the same as the 1929 carbine on page 7 of this document https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21AIu9EoTL4tuZdio&cid=C9488A1410A7C413&id=C9488A1410A7C413%21252&parId=root&o=OneUp
Second oddity is the rear sight. Its not the ramped type but a single fixed buckhorn type with a second taller hinged buckhorn in front of it that apparently is to adjust for elevation if the shorter first buckhorn is too low. The whole sight assembly is fairly short and seems to attach to the barrel via a slotted tab. It looks very much like the Winchester Three Leaf Express Rear Sight No. 34C and could be. I didn’t try folding down the shorter one. It also appears to be the same as the one on the 1929 in the aforementioned document.
The finish is pretty uniformly worn, almost white overall so it doesn’t look like its been messed with. Everything appears original on it. (yes I wish I had pics to share) Bore was decent, rifling is worn but not dark or pitted. Decent looking for almost 100 years old.
Anyone have a clue what the heck it is and what the value might be?? Thanks in advance!
John,
For my own edification, what does “LGS” mean?
For research purposes, what is the complete serial number? Serial number 960000 was manufactured in June of 1923.
In regards to your Model 94, it sounds like it is a special order “Eastern” Carbine, with a fluted comb shotgun butt, and a hard rubber butt plate. Does it also have the 2/3 length magazine?

Sorry that is Local Gun Shop/Store.
I’ll PM the serial number to you for your records.
Its has the full length magazine just like a later carbine. Would those rear sights have also been a special order item?
The bluing is almost all gone but the wood and metal are all in nice condition. Action works smoothly as well.
Can anyone give me an idea/ballpark of the value of this one? I’m trying to decide whether to buy it or not since it seems underpriced. Thanks!

John,Yes, the rear sight was special ordered, as was the shotgun butt, and the omission of the saddle ring. The value is difficult to pin down without seeing the gun, but it should be worth at least $750.

Great info, thanks very much Bert! I’m going to see if I can get some pics of it to post.
