Cleaning up, cleaning out. Viewing, contemplating some “projects” of old. One such, a really decent Winchester Model 54 Short Rifle barrel. 20″ with integral forged sight, 30-06 & all typical Win exposed barrel nomenclature & under barrel: “CMS VP 1906 (‘triangle’ mark) 33”; presumably 1933 mfg date. About 90% overall condition with quite nice bore.
A gun show table purchase, perhaps thirty years ago, of small investment. Now… What to do with it?
My original inclination to mate it with my earliest Model 70 SN 39xx, receiver bridge D&T, little finish, smooth as glass action. Contemplated Mannlicher carbine classic European stock. Realistically nowadays, likely investment disproportionate to value increase. The ‘labor of love’ excuse, bit thin as normal ‘age realities’ ever looming. Yet also, alternative of course, to install it on one of my own Model 54 rifles, replacing a standard 24″ ’06 barrel. No immediate fully condition-worthy candidate ‘other than’ and not about to disturb either Model 54 Supergrade 270 or my 7mm later model rifle! Of course, ultimately… “Sell it”, as a viable answer. Just not ready to do that now, though would appreciate any ‘opinions’ of value!
Closing with the ‘high note’. nice to have such happy ‘problems!’ 🙂
Thanks for any/all thoughts!
Best & Stay Safe!
