I spotted this 50-100-450. Figured you’d like it. Do you think it was all done at Winchester? The old, “return and repair” speculation rears its head:

Steve, it’s funny you bring this one up. I know this rifle and i wouldn’t even offer the starting bid now. This rifle sold March 22′ at Amoskeag. It was from Perry White’s collection. The letter does not state that it was converted to 50-100 as it letters as a 45-90. I would have been all over it had it stayed that way. The funny thing is when I looked at it last March it had a broken butt plate and a sizable chunk missing from the forward edge of the comb. When it was at Amoskeag the stock number matched the tang , 259 xxx rb. Wound up at Grove’s 3 months latter and the stock is now just fine, now at Ward’s with no mention of the tang/stock numbers. I can not say that it has the magical “7 cuts” needed to make it run with the big 50 cartridges. and I did not try to put any thru it. I can say that it sold for 18800 with the juice, Grove wanted 29900, and now it is up for auction starting at 12500. I wouldn’t pay any where near that now, to many questions, with to few answers. Thats my take on it. Buyer beware……

There’s a lot of monkey business when it comes to Grove’s. I’ve noticed this over the years and cannot sugarcoat it. Caveat emptor!
Here here. Makes me very leery of them, a few others too. I see alot of guns from Amoskeag winding up at Grove and Merz.
Take it from a guy who knows firsthand. mrcvs is very, very, correct. Big Larry

Something tells me that they don’t look exactly the same at Grove’s, and possibly Mertz’s, as they did at Amoskeag. Sure, a decrease in condition is possible from subsequent mishandling, but these rifles amazingly improve in condition over time.
One of the great mysteries of the universe. 😀

No mystery if you’ve got the services of a top-notch restoration man at your disposal; he should be advertising “I can make your ‘damaged goods’ look as good as Grove’s & Mertz’s.”
