The 1873 src listed on GB has the barrel address located under the rear barrel band (see pic 15).  Is this correct? Description states 20″ barrel.  I have a 3rd model standard src but the address is completely behind the rear barrel band.

I admit I don’t know a whole lot about the 1873’s, but I would think that Winchester would not want the address to be obscured.  The seller does mention that the wood may have been replaced–maybe the forearm wood is a replacement and shorter than the original, therefore, moving the barrel band closer to the receiver?  Here’s the link:

Well it took me a while to figure this one out but it finally hit me. I blow up the barrel address and that is not a 73 barrel on it. It has the wrong barrel address. It has a October 14 1884 date, it should be October 16 1880. My guess is its 92 barrel.

Good catch on the patent date.  What do you think about the front sight?  It doesn’t look like the standard 1892 pinned blade front sight–see photo 16.

I saw the front sight too and its not for a 92.  It looks like the later style 73 carbine sight.  Madis mentions a shipment of 92 carbines that went to Brazil and they were having trouble with parts so 73 barrels, buttplates, sights, bands, and magazine tubes (page 383).  May be a 92 that the barrel was parted from to make the 73 carbine captioned?? Who knows.  The barrel address is as Bob mentioned for a 92.

I think to answer the questions this gun brings up you would need to have a hands on inspection and look under the barrel to see what it really is. It can’t of been manufactured like that since its a 1883 gun.

Here’s one of those 1892 carbines you mentioned.  Wish it were mine.
