Does this look correct (minus the rear sight) for what the seller claims it to be?  Should there be some kind of French import markings?

Thanks,

Don,

That is a correct WW I French Contract Model 1894 SRC.  Only the specimens that were surplused (sold) and went to the Belgian Congo have the added proof marks.  The original rear sight was identical to the standard carbine sight, except it was graduated in Meters.  It will be a tough sight to find to make the gun right again.

Thanks Bert. I imagine that would be a very difficult sight to find.

Here’s one. https://www.ebay.com/itm/VERY-RARE-METRIC-WINCHESTER-OR-MARLIN-CARBINE-REAR-LADDER-SIGHT-w-METERS-YARDS/302584420063?hash=item46736fd6df:

That is not the correct sight for the French contract Model 1894 Carbines.  Close, but no cigar.

I’m trying to compare the ebay sight to the sight pictured in Brad Dunbar’s article on page 25 of the Summer 2014 Collector magazine.  Honestly, I cannot see any differences.  What am I missing?

OK, on my second look at the sight on ebay, it is correct for the French contract Model 1894 Carbines.  I am rather surprised at how far it has been bid up to !

I am not unfamiliar with these carbines.  What fascinated me – that I did not know – is that the side swivels were not factory installed but rather were installed by the French armorers.  Were not side swivels like these – a special order item available Winchester?  Has anyone seen them on a Winchester?  I can recall a’94 SRC .25-35 from about 40 years ago that had them.  I was not real experienced at the time but I can say that among the Winchester Collectors and Dealers at the time – who looked at it – no one doubted the originality of those swivels.

Steve,

To the best of my knowledge, Winchester never offered side mounted slings for the Model 1894.
