I came across a Model 1894 I was given to me in the mid 1970’s by my Grandfather and it recently surfaced (after 50+ years) and I’m trying to find out more about it and there’s some confusion about the date of its manufacture. The SN is 36965. I have seen it said that this is made in 1895 and another site says it is 1898. Can you clear that up for me?

Unfortunately more than 90% of the Winchester DOM information you will find on the internet is grossly erroneous.
Per the original Winchester factory records, Model 1894 S/N 36965 was manufactured in March 1898.

Thanks for that. The serial number ending the year 1895 is 44,359 though. Either way it meets the criteria for an official (pre-1899). Colour me confused.

I published the table below shown below 15-years ago. The Year ending serial numbers in the PRSRB column were derived directly from the original Winchester records in possession of the Cody Firearms Museum records office. It was George Madis that published the erroneous information (back in 1980) that you apparently found and are referring to.

May 1932.
The look-up resource tool on our WACA website was set-up to provide the year of manufacture only. Year ago I created Excel tables for all of the Winchester models that have surviving factory records that break the serial numbers down to the month & year of manufacture.
