I’ve seen a couple Winchester Factory Letters lately where the rifle’s caliber wasn’t listed. 

Seems that would be basic info always included. Any reason why it wouldn’t be?

Kevin,

That is normal for the early guns when they only made one caliber like the 73 and 76. The guns were unmarked and the records did not denote a caliber since there was only caliber available.

Thanks Bob!

I figured that may be the case for pre-160,000 S# 1873s, however thought a 73 S# 173811 manufactured in 1885 would probably have a caliber (44-40) designation in it’s letter.
