Kevin,
That is normal for the early guns when they only made one caliber like the 73 and 76. The guns were unmarked and the records did not denote a caliber since there was only caliber available.

Thanks Bob!
I figured that may be the case for pre-160,000 S# 1873s, however thought a 73 S# 173811 manufactured in 1885 would probably have a caliber (44-40) designation in it’s letter.
