Recent acquisition with some questions for the forum. About what year and/or serial number did Winchester begin production of the model 64?? I’m thinking this one is near the front of the pack—what do any of you think? I’ve read somewhere that a few of the early models weren’t set up — drilled and tapped for the reciever peeps. Thanks for your attention to this matter. PH

OfflinePaul, the first thing I would do is ask Bert to verify the date of manufacture. I am no expert but it is my understanding production of the Model 64 began about July 5, 1932 according to the Polishing Room records; and drilling and tapping the left receiver wall became a standard feature in August, 1933.

This has been discussed many times here on the Forum – early 64’s were not drilled and tapped as shown in Pauls example. Later they were drilled and tapped as per this example. Bert will probably chime in on exactly when this transition was made.

OfflinePaul,
The Model 64 was introduced in the January 1933 catalog, but actual production began in the latter half of the year 1932 (November). The early production M64 rifles were not drilled & tapped for a receiver mounted peep sight unless specifically ordered. It was in August of 1934 when the drilled & tapped peep sight mount holes became a standard feature. S/N 1091823 was manufactured in August of 1933.

Thanks for all your input. I figured it must be in the very early batches.
Related model 64 question::::
Were there many of the 219 Zippers manufactured in the early (prewar) years? Most of the ones I’ve seen available are in the later production years. PH
In my survey of the Model 64, I have thus far documented (170) Pre-WW II production 219 Zipper rifles, and (159) Post-WW II production rifles.

1946 zipper – considered post war

1942 20″ barrel (carbine) – considered a pre war
Per Bert a long time ago: a pre-war for the model 1894 and 64 is all the guns made thru serial number 1343183 (August 23, 1942). That is when Winchester suspended production to support WW II. Post war production was resumed in September of 1945 (a few were made in November 1944
