I have an early 1873 serial 1040 that 1873man has been helping me research. It appears to have a 66 win. barrel on it and the reversed rear sight.

Well here is another early model I found at the local Barnes & Noble it appears to be a 3 digit serial number 24 in rifle with set trigger and it has a letter which I looked at through a 10 power eye loop. I can’t quite make out the date, it is either 73 or 74. What is interesting it is almost the same as mine, raised round thumb print dust cover, set trigger, 24 in barrel, but instead of the reversed sight it has a 66 type ladder sight.

This is on page 38 of a cheap clearance table book called “John Wayne”s Wild West” by Bruce Wexler

I’m going to try contacting him through the publisher to see if I can get a better copy of the letter and more pictures of the rifle.

Anybody on this forum seen the book and the picture? I’d appreciate any info if any of you know anything about this gun.

Dick,

In what context are they portraying  the gun? Was it as a gun that was used by him?

No not used by him just a gun from the early west. There were pictures of 66’s and Henrys also. The nice part is it was photoed on top of a win cody letter.

I used an eye loop to see if I could read the letter and I could make out 24 inch rifle, set trigger , 3 digit serial number, but I could not make out the date. I think it was 1874.

I contacted the publisher to see if the author had any info on the gun or if I could get a copy of it. They wrote back saying the author had no more information on the gun.

The obvious cool part was it has a Henry barrel with the Henry stand up ladder sight with the flat spring below it in the dovetail an inch out from the receiver instead of the reversed sight like mine.
