Spending a little down time on Merz’ site. (Yes, it would be dangerous if I had any money) I’m thinking a Cody letter would help explain this carbine’s current configuration as Merz’ description seems a bit ambiguous to me. Not running down Merz, just trying to understand what I’m seeing and reading.

It has a saddle ring, so I doubt it was initially a rifle. They do refer to “factory records”. Why not call them and say you are interested but the write-up seems ambiguous. (I’ve called them a couple of times and found them to be very helpful – and did buy 1.)

What got me was the mention of the original octagon barrel, seems very odd on a carbine.
As suggested I sent an inquiry. Very interesting carbine, looking forward to knowing more about it.
