I have been looking for clarification on this for a while and haven’t found it but am currently out of pocket and have a possible purchase decision facing me.
Is there a difference between deluxe and standard other than checkering and figure of wood?
The standard model 71 is a 36 model long tang with factory upgraded wood and the bolt sight with 24 inch barrel. But the owner at one time had it drilled for a scope. Bluing is great, but there are those 3 extra screws.
The Deluxe is a 38 model with the bolt peep and 24 inch barrel.
Deluxe is 3 times the price of the standard.
Well for starters, there is no such thing as a “deluxe” Model 71. Instead, it is a “Special”.
Yes there are several differences between a “Special” and a “Standard” Model 71 rifle.
1. The Special has nicely checkered stocks, whereas the Standard does not.
2. The Special as a capped pistol grip, whereas the Standard does not.
3. The Special has QD Sling mounts, whereas the Standard does not.
In regards to the two rifles you are looking at, the Standard is a “shooter” grade rifle only. With it being drilled & tapped for a side mount scope, it has lost all of its “collector” value. You did not mention what the asking price is for either rifle, but at only 3X the price, the Special is either way underpriced, or the Standard is way overpriced.
For the benefit of my research survey, I would like to know what the serial number is on both rifles.
Last thought… have you read the article that I wrote discussing the Model 71?

I hadn’t read it yet but I will remedy that shortly.
The special is 3k and the shooter is 1k. Though growing up with his grandson I knew the Colonel the standard grade belonged to.
So there is that connection to factor in plus 1k is a lot easier to stomach without selling something than 3k would be.
I originally went down this hole figuring out if I wanted a shooter 71 but started reading all the praise of the “deluxe” models.
Anyway off to read your article. Thanks Bert!

In your article you called two of versions deluxe. Is there a change in the designation? Or did the factory call it special? I have a four digit 1936 standard.

When I wrote the article, I improperly used the term “Deluxe”. Winchester never used that term, and instead, referred to them as a “Special”.
