Well….Took the old 1906 Winchester Model 94 out on Saturday to fill the freezer with Venison. Not 20 minutes in my stand and a nice tender doe wandered by. One shot with the 32 Special at a measured 114 yards / iron sights and she dropped like a sack of flour. 170g bullet at 1400fps did the job.
Been chasing a beautiful 10 pointer with amazing white rack for the last few days. His rack looks like it is electrified! But he won’t give me a shot everytime I see him.
Today we are stuck in the camp. (Stover, MO) Raining so hard the little stream that runs across the drive is flooded to a depth of about 4′ and running like the Colorado river! We might take the backhoe out and attempt to cross a bit later!
We got invited to a nice home cooked meal at the neighbors down the road, but unless we can cross the stream we’ll be eating leftovers!
Loving it!
The first day of my first hunt for blacktail in Oregon, I got a dandy that was 3rd in the Oregon Bluebook using Grandfather’s 1950 mod 94 carbine. Both now mounted on my wall.

Nice shot with a classic rifle. I hunted Monday with my original 1886 45-70 shipped in 1890. Alas, my hunting buddy dropped a big fat Whitetail doe, which required my tag. On the bright side, I now have 54 pounds of wild, lean, organic venison cut, wrapped and frozen in my freezer.
Well, I didn’t get the 10 pointer. But my two hunting buddies scored big time! I had the bottom deer in my sights, but I had my Thompson Contender pistol and it was 217yds away. I was in a tree stand in a 25mph wind and couldn’t keep it in the scope! I climbed down to try and stalk it but it moved into a small patch of woods that I didn’t want to access for fear of spooking it. Two hours later it emerged right in front og my buddy, Paul! Bang..hunt over!
There is always tomorrow!
