I tried this question on another forum and really didn’t get much feedback, so I thought I would try here.

I’m trying to date a Model 70 with a serial number of 50,9xx.  I forget the last two digits.

But anyways when I look at proofhouse.com, it shows for the Model 70 that 1942 started with the 50,754 serial number.  So that should date mine around January 1942.

But when I check oldguns.net, it dates it to 1946, which I think is totally wrong.  And I did order Roger Rule’s book, but have not got it yet.  But a friend looked it up for me and I think he said it was late 1942, like August or Sept 1942.

Does anyone know what is correct?  Also I did a search over at Cody and I believe if I try to do a Cody letter on it, it will not show anything of where this serial shipped will it?

Thanks gentlemen in advance!

Steven,

Depending on what the last two digits of the serial number are, it will either be late August, or early September 1942. The letter from Cody will only give you the date the serial number was applied, nothing more.

Hey, Steve, when did you start fraternizing with Model 70s?  Nothing GI about them!

Only dating reference I have is a list of numbers published in the Nov., 1980, Rifleman, which also shows ’46 as the year; must be incorrect, so when you finish reading Rule’s book, can you lend it to me?  I can’t afford it!

No doubt about it, this is the correct information (1942) no matter what you read on other serial # websites.  This is the current (and validated) info for when the serial number was applied to the rifle and it became a “firearm”.  Other previously published dates are more subjective and some are based on when it was “sold” which is irrelevant to the actual serial number as they were not shipped in serial # order from the warehouse.

Since I now know the Rifleman chronology I’d been going by is off-base, what is the correct date of mfg. for #24,408 ?  Brl is dated ’36, but I know that has nothing to do with the date of assembly.

24,408 was serialized in late Feb. of 1939….

If you can’t convince them, confuse them
