I know we’ve seen this before, but it was pleasant to see it pop up again. Part of Ray Bentley’s collection. Anyone here get it? Seems to me at one time there was a crate of 1895 carbines out there as well. I also seem to vaguely remember a crate of Winchester 1897 riot shotguns. Can’t recall for sure.
Ah, I know where I last saw these. Julia sold them in 2012 out of the Wes Adams collection. Except, it is a different case of them (different serial numbers). So there have been (at least) two full sets of these floating around. I wonder if whoever bought Wes Adams crate also won Ray Bentley’s crate.
The price difference seems to highlight the downturn we see (not on all pieces) in the collector market. In 2012, that crate sold for $218,500. In the recent auction, this crate sold for $120,750. Nearly a $100,000 decrease! The history of both crates is outlined in the 2012 Julia description. I’m not surprised that two of the top collectors out there each ended up with a crate.
I will also mention that in 2012 Julia description, they reference crates of 1895 carbines and they note that a total of 13 crates of carbines had been found – equally divided between 1894 and 1895 carbines. It sounds like of these the two crates of 1894’s and one crate of 1895’s stayed intact.
Cool stuff

By the way, I would suggest that before anyone comes to the conclusion that I have very deep pockets, I suggest that one should pay very close attention to the date of my first post within this thread
Ok, I am confused. It looks like you have made two posts on this thread – and both today. I hope this is not yet another sign of aging on my part.

That’s OK, Steve. Drop by sometime and he’ll show you the crate of 1895’s as well.

I have been told there will be a crate of mint 1895 carbines in the upcoming Morphy auction. I would presume they are also part of the Ray Bentley collection, since Morphy is handling the rest of his collection going to auction.

I think I’m going to hold out for my own crate of Winchester saddle ring carbines. And as the M1886 is my favorite SRC, that’s what I’ll hold out for. It will have to be a crate of .50-100-450’s. However, I would take a crate of .33’s as a substitute – as long as they are SRC’s

A crate of mint carbines? Make mine 1866’s. Maybe that would keep me from taking them out to shoot them.
