OfflineThe checkering pattern on your Model 1894 does not exactly match the H-pattern found on verified factory original specimens from the same time period.
Specifically, the area that I have hi-lighted in your picture and mine.
Your rifle…

Verified factory examples…

I agree with this assessment. At first, it appeared to be a pistol grip with checkering, but the subtle differences…. Do you think it was a plain pistol grip rifle and checkering happened later? I imagine it’s just beyond the range in which factory letters are available?

OfflineIt appears to have a slightly modified version of the factory H-pattern checkering on the pistol grip of the stock. In viewing your latest pictures, it does appear to be factory work. Is the serial number early enough to get a CFM letter for it?

sn# 359876 just misses getting a CFM letter I beleive.
It does just miss the mark.
Based on my research survey, I am now of the opinion that your rifle is 100% factory original. The picture below is a snap-shot of my survey file. It appears that Winchester made a small batch of similar rifles in that serial range.
