I recently purchased a 94 rifle chambered in 32 WS, serial #1068xxx. The rifle is a takedown model with a full magazine and a 1/2 octagon, 1/2 round barrel. Referencing Robert Renneberg’s tremendous book, “The Winchester Model 94, The First 100 Years,“ the receiver tang marking is a Type 6 pictured on page 122 and the barrel markings are Type 4 pictured on page 132. There is also a cold stamped marking on the right side of the barrel like the one pictured on page 139 of Mr. Renneberg’s book. The photo caption explains why this marking is found on specimens chambered in discontinued calibers. What I am hoping to get is some input as to why an existing stock, remarked barrel would be on a rifle chambered in the popular 32 WS?

NOTE: I tried to upload pictures of the markings but, for some reason beyond my technical abilities, could not accomplish that feat.

Thank you for your feedback!

At the time your Take Down Sporting Rifle was manufactured, Winchester was using up as many of the older parts still in their inventory as possible (in preparation for discontinuing the Sporting Rifles).  There were a significant number of half-octagon barreled Take Down rifles that were assembled in the 1061846 – 1069978 serial number range, and the majority of them were the 32 W.S. caliber

You can send pictures to me, and please include the full serial number (so that I can records it in my research survey).
