I saw this special order deluxe 1886 in 45-70 and although I had told myself not to buy any more Winchesters, I bought this one…
That’s a beauty. I have a Deluxe in .45-70 with 2X wood. It’s not case colored though and is a round barrel Lightweight.
Shoot low boys. They're riding Shetland Ponies.
Nice rifle shrapnel. Is that a 2/3 mag? What year is it.

great caliber, great configuration and CONDITION – Santa was definitely good to you.

It is a 5 round magazine, which is a rare configuration. I had a knowledgeable Winchester collector preview the gun and he said it was certainly an exceptional gun with a few rare features…
Do you have a letter on it you might post and where did you acquire it from?

That’s a great looking ’86, Kirk. I would accept that from Santa any day.
The 1/2 Oct. barrel and partial mag are both scarce features on that model. Is it also a 24″ barrel? Just looks a little shorter than standard ….. maybe not. If so, that’s another uncommon feature.

I was pondering, “what will Kirk hunt with this rifle….?” Then I concluded, probably the better question is, “what won’t he hunt with it?” 😉
I, too, was wondering what he would choose to down with it…elk? Wondered if there was a late season in his area. Then, the mental gymnastics…that he would not beat it around on a hunt.
Nice mule deer, Shrapnel. It is ever a pleasure to hunt with these old pieces.
My latest “gift” that happened during Christmas is an original Remington New Model Army. Maybe I’ll hunt varmints with it.

Varmints are the best way to season these guns and get them prepped for hunting…
Kirk – you really do a great job getting these very old rifles to SHOOT!
Kirk – that is a lot of stuff. I always enjoy seeing other’s reloading set-ups. I know my reloading set-up wasn’t all that much 40 years ago… but the passage of 40 years can have quite the impact.
