I’m looking for the experts here to confirm that the checkering shown in the photos is Winchester factory-crafted. Thanks for your help……

Photos of the gun and entire checkering pattern would be very helpful

Appears to be an extra coat of something on that wood

Knowing what Model Gun, serial range, and the date of manufacture would be helpful also.

Looks factory to me, but sanded and refinished.

I too would like to know what Model it is on, and to see a few pictures of the gun from more inclusive view.

The “over-run” of the checkering on to the borders makes me suspect it is not factory work, but as others have stated we need to see the entire firearm to be completely sure.

Lots of over-runs on factory M70 checkering

The over runs and lack of full cutting on one side seems consistent with some models of Winchester checkering.  Not every “deluxe” was blessed with flawless checkering.  My take at least.  Earlier versions tended to have better checkering in my opinion.  Tim

I also agree with the comments on wanting to know the model and more pictures of the checkering to verify the style of Winchester checkering or not!

Looking at the pics you posted close up and enhancing them, almost looks like the finish on the checkering was heated or almost burnt to give it an older maybe antique look, if not original or correct. In my pessimistic view, of possible being off, or not original! Surprised

Naturally, without clicking on the pictures it looks presentable.Smile But I can’t verify either way!

The quality of the stock checkering work took a very noticeable downward spiral in the immediate Post-WW II years.  The LPI became noticeably coarser, and over-runs were not uncommon.  The only true quality checkering & carving after WW II was accomplished in the Custom Shop.

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen, but it doesn’t matter……..the photos were sent to me by a friend and he’s not able to get additional photos from the gun’s owner. Turns out it’s a M75 Sporting Rifle and I informed him that these were factory checkered.
