I’ve wanted to get another Win. 94 in 30-30 for a long time; bought an early 2000s Ranger model previously that had the worst trigger & action was the furthest thing from smooth so I traded that one.  Well today I found this in the LGS; a 1977 production Model 94 in 30-30 in almost perfect condition. While I know the pre-64 crowd will poo-poo it, I did my homework and I wanted a non-AE model in good condition as a shooter that didn’t have a rebounding hammer, no safeties. This being a late 70’s model it’s got all the “fixes” that were implemented after the ’64 cost cutting screwups, has the better shell lifter. The metal is in pristine shape; no rust. No pitting. Deep bluing on the barrel and receiver (yes I know that the receivers were still sintered metal with iron plating that was blued). Wood is in absolutely perfect condition, if a bit bland in the figure department. The bore is fantastic. Mirror bright after a quick cleaning with Hoppes 9. Crispy rifling. Chamber and bolt face all great.  The trigger pull is pretty darn light and crisp. WAY better than my prior 94. The lever action is also way smoother.  All that was missing is the front sight hood which I’ll order. Also came with nice Williams sling mounts and a pretty cool padded sling with embossed deer & acorn on the leather. Can’t wait to shoot it.  Paid what seemed in line with what most online sales & auctions are going for great condition 1970s or later 94’s.

I like these aftermarket sight hoods: https://ebay.io/m/JOjfcJ — they have a taller version as well if you want. Just message the seller and ask him for measurements.

I think that’s a nice rifle, like you say, a lot of the cost cutting had been rectified by ’77. Hope you hunt a long time with it!

I don’t think anyone would turn their nose up at that rifle, they just wouldn’t by one of their own.  Zebulon has some very detailed posts about the post 64 94s. Sounds like you’ve already read them.  Nice looking rifle.  I have one just like it.  Makes an excellent truck gun and looks pretty.

In my opinion it’s way more appealing than something with a black or camouflage synthetic stock.  Maybe consider using those factory drilled holes and install a receiver peep.

Just looked up the sling; it’s a Hunter Trophy Padded sling; retails for $90 itself.

Also fed some shells through the gun; loads, cycles and ejects fine.
