Greetings
My father is nearing the end of his long life and he has recently passed me down a modest number of pre 64 winchester rifles and a number of older revolvers. The last one was this one just a couple days ago. It is in reasonably good condition and works pretty darn good. I can see one stock screw that seems non original, it is missing its dust cover, and has some slightly different sights. The front sight is a rocky mtn style. It looks to be slightly filed for greater accuracy? Has a 28 inch barrel with a clean bore. Serial number 84191. Lettering sharp throughout. I sent a letter request to the Cody Museum today.
What is the best approach to cleaning it up and lubricating it. Im good with modern guns but this one makes me a little nervous. Its been in a safe for the past 50 years and was well used before that. It was my fathers pride and joy.
Thank in advance, Gary
Gary,
I was the guy that replied to your post about the 1’s in the serial number and looking at the pictures it does not have any original finish left and I don’t really see any rust build up that you would want to remove. If you tried to clean it too much the gun will end up being a shined up gun which will not look good. I would just keep the gun oiled with any gun oil. Just don’t wipe down the wood with oil. I saw the bottom stock screw was replaced with a common flat head wood screw.

Thank you both, that is exactly what I will do. I think I will join so I can get some similar advice on all my rifles. Every single one of them seem to have an issue or two, but they all work great and he had ammunition with all of them, albeit some of it is pretty old. This is my new found passion/hobby no doubt.

Lots of benefits of joining WACA, Gary. I can’t imagine collecting Winchesters without taking advantage of the many resources WACA has to offer. In addition to this forum and other benefits we have a world- class magazine published four times a year and access to past issues online for research. Also free admission to the annual Cody show in addition to other shows, including the TGCA Fall Show in Denton, Texas this weekend.
Also, if possible talk with your dad about his collection. He will enjoy talking about them and that’s the best way to learn about the guns and part of their history.
