It’s difficult to say without having the revolver in hand, but it might be suggestive of the buttplate having been recasecoloured.
Burt Humphrey is REALLY good with this sort of stuff. Burt, what do you think?
I am not a fan of the gun – have not been from the initial post. But, it is ok if others like it, it would just not be for me. The case hardened butt plate looks new – how is that possible when the wood next to it is not? And, the fit at the toe is bad. If you ran your finger across the toe where wood meets metal it would not be smooth. Consistent wear is important. Case colors on the butt plate did not fare well on Winchesters but even when they are worn, the wood to metal fit should remain proud. Steve, I believe you previously made a comment about the take down not having ever scratched the barrel. Take this from a guy that has owned quite a few take down 92’s, it is hard to take them down over time without barrel scratches – not to say somebody could not have been extra careful or not taken it down at all because that could be the case. I certainly agree with your statement about the need to have the gun in hand to give it a proper evaluation – once I looked at the butt plate/wood fit and finish, that was enough to keep me from having any interest in the gun.
