Mark,
Earlier guns where marked on the top and later it was moved to the side. Winchester did this on other models as well.

Hello Mark,
The caliber stamp was placed on the top of the barrel from the beginning of production and stayed there until a couple years after Winchester began applying the superposed W/P proof stamp on the barrels and receivers. Proof stamp begin to appear around SN 300,000 (1905) and were placed forward of the caliber stamp. Starting in 1908 around SN 413000 the caliber stamp is commonly found on the left side of the barrel and the barrel proof stamp is moved close to the receiver directly opposite the receiver proof. Note that this left side position is not consistent among the 4 different caliber or barrel types based on what I have found In my survey of these rifles.

As always, the information that you guys supply me is very much welcomed and appreciated!
Mike, the details you gave coincide exactly with a m92 that I have been looking at…. and it was made in 1905.
Which style is more popular, the Carbine Saddle rings or the 24 inch barrels? I seem to be able to find a lot of the 24″ version but not that many SRCs. When I do find the SRCs they tend to be about 25% more expensive.
Cheers
Mark
Mark,
I am still cataloging rifles for my survey but the standard sporting rifle configuration is by far the most common style produced in the Model 1892 line. From the data I have collected SRC configuration guns make up a little over 25% of the guns offered for sale. Note that this might not be the actual production statistic. That is something I will try to figure out at a later date. If you will pass on the serial number and some photos to me I will be glad to assess the rifle and comment if you would like. The variation in possible asking is prices is going to be dictated in large by the differences in condition and caliber between the two configurations.
