OfflineIt’s a post-apocalyptic science fiction series on Amazon Prime. Season two is currently playing with a couple more episodes yet to drop. One of the main character – The Ghoul – played by Walton Goggins – carries a Mare’s Leg, purportedly built out of an 1873 Winchester. He typically has this slung over his shoulder. But an episode or two back, the lead female character is offered to choose some weapons from a chest. She picks out a M1892 Winchester made into a Mare’s leg. I didn’t get a great look at it, but it looked like a clone to Josh Randall’s. Shortly after taking possession of the piece, she shoots a zombie in the knee with it. I don’t think she hangs on to the piece – which disappointed me greatly.

OfflineA few years back one of the reproduction manufacturers starting producing Mare’s Leg “Pistols” from the factory. So you don’t have to worry about the BATF causing any problems looking for all your Mare’s Legs laying around.
Just don’t go cut down your original Winchester Rifle, otherwise they’ll be at your door. But why would you anyways?

I thinks there’s all kinds of them out there now from various manufacturers such as Henry, Rossi, Taura, Heritage, Chiappa, with chamberings such as .44 magnum, .45 Colt, .410, .44-40, 38/357, .22, .22WMR .
Here’s one in 12 gauge:
Here’s one in takedown version (which I think is sort of cool):

OfflineYeah but. Why pay that much for a pistol, when you can buy the whole rifle?

I agree completely. I’ve never fired a Mare’s Leg but it seems like an credibly unhandy thing to use and a pistol or revolver would be much more practical – with a short rifle being even better. However, there must be plenty out there who thing differently – in numbers large enough for more than a half-dozen manufacturers to be turning them out.

Agreed. The resurrection of an impactable movie gimmick. Aside from a point & shoot perspective at close range (accurately definitely questionable), they are pretty much useless IMHO.

OfflineA friend of mine has one and I’ve done some shooting with it. Used as a pistol, it is really awkward. Used as a rifle, it is even more awkward. Think of trying to aim it like a rifle, but with no buttstock to keep the butt from slamming up into your face – so you have to hold it further away from your face. The result is a sight picture reminiscent of what a drunken sailor sees when he’s hanging upside down by one leg from the mainmast in gale force winds.

OfflineSBR’s and SBS’s are pretty cool until you try to shoot them, PCC’s excepted. I have a pistol grip riot gun stashed somewhere but drills with it are not my idea of a good time. I used to hang out at a public range/gun shop with some guys who all owned TC Contenders and had rifles in 45-70. We all wanted to try a 14″ 45-70 barrel but we knew none of us would want to shoot it more than a few times. We came pretty close to buying a community barrel to pass around but we found another diversion. Shooting a 3 or 4 pound 45-70 is a recipe for a hard to cure flinch!

Long ago, I went down the TC Contender rabbit hole. I had many barrels. I suppose I had some fun at the time but I crawled out of that rabbit hole – and stayed out. I did have a 14 inch .45-70 barrel. I don’t remember the recoil being harsh but recall I am a handloader. I don’t recall what my loads were but I suspect they were on the light side. The scoped .35 Remington barrel was about as accurate as most rifles at 100 yards. I also had a .30-30 barrel that I had rechambered to .30-40 Krag. Oh and I had one of those .45/.410 barrels with a choke. I shot some clay pigeons with it a few times.
Now in the .45-70 offering, here’s the Bond Arms Cyclops for Mike to shoot some hogs with:

I still have 14″ .223 Rem and 35 Rem barrels for the TC, I’ll probably never bother with a .223 bolt gun because that Contender will outshoot most of them. I hunted with my 35 Rem a few times, put meat in the freezer but no fun on the range! My Thumper is an early M-word 1895 Guide Gun with a muzzle brake. It shoots a load I would NOT recommend in a Contender or SBR. Good medicine for big hogs.

Mike – you probably wouldn’t use M .45-70 load in that Bond “derringer” either!
I’ve done a small amount of hunting (deer) with a handgun but a rifle simply feels so much better to me. Much better.
I’m sure a Mare’s Leg would feel even less desirable than a handgun.

It is funny you fellows bring up the TC Contenders. Many years ago (when I was still an active IHMSA competitor), I was shooting a 10-inch (Production Class) in 357 Max, and a 14-inch Super Contender (Unlimited Class) in 7mm IHMSA. Recently, I helped my wife’s younger brother get set-up to reload for his TC in 30 Herrett. The most savage recoiling TC I had the displeasure of shooting was a Super Contender in 454 Casull.

I’ve never fired a .454 Revolver – and now, I am certain I never will. I wouldn’t shoot one in a Super Contender either. Self-punishment has become a whole lot less appealing to me as I age. I wouldn’t shoot a .454 in one of those clone Rossi ’92 carbines either.
The most pleasant shooting barrel I had for my Contender was a ten inch octagon barrel in .221 Fireball.
