I was thinking how very far out of reach a factory engraved M1886 is (the other thread on this topic easily supports this point).

Here’s an example from John Warren who practiced his craft for many years.  Impressions?  Opinions?

I was struck by how much better this rifle would look with fancy wood.

I think it is pretty good work overall. Only thing I don’t like too much, are the gold inlays. To me the moose, and bear just don’t look quite right.

I take it that Mr. Warren is deceased?

Sincerely,

Maverick

I think it is very nice looking work. Engraving is such a personal thing that the subject matter can often be the choosing of the original customer.  I agree the wood does not match the engraving and looks kind of out of place.

THIS ALL STARTED WITH JUST ONE GUN!

Also not a fan of the gold inlay, but I like this example! Agreed that the wood looks out-of-place.

Very detailed engraving, appears to be well executed. Wood has nice contrast but I would have preferred straight grain on the fore end as well. Overall a very nice rifle, IMHO it doesn’t need checkering. Checkering is a functional feature and this rifle isn’t likely to see much use.

I don’t know what year he passed away but I assume he has as he was born in 1904.  He was known for both engraving as well as checkering and stock work.  I understand that  around the 1950’s, he was considered one of the finest engravers in the country.

Here is another example.  I think I like the stocking job better than the engraving/inlays:

Regarding the M1886 that I started this thread with, I see it sold in 2009 at the James Julia action.  It doesn’t seem to have appreciated very much.  Quite the contrast to the other rifles we’ve discussed recently (i.e. with original Winchester engraving).

And here’s another one by Mr. Warren.  I’m not knocking his work, but this one isn’t for me:

That is a 76 and not a 73. Still nice work. I also doubt that you could get that amount of engraving coverage and gold inlay from a engraver today for that price for the 86.

Sincerely,

Maverick
