What indicates that this gun is a fake?  I would assume that it has something to do with the ordnance stamps.  I’d really like to know what to look for in case I ever happen to stumble upon a spruce gun for sale.

Mark:

For one thing, real Spruce Guns do not have periods after the “U” and “S”.

Mark,

Rick pointed out one of the obvious clues, and the others are the shape & design of the flaming bomb is not correct, and the serial number is slightly too late.

Thanks, Rick and Bert.  Having spent most of my career in the timber industry here in the great Northwest, the spruce guns hold a special appeal to me.  Just want to make sure when I find the right one, that it really is the right one and not a cheap fake.  I have noticed differences in the flaming bomb, but had missed the periods in the US.

Good information, thanks! I collected Winchesters for many years, including ’94 carbines, but most were earlier guns. I had heard the term “Spruce gun”, but never had any interest until recently. I found my grandfather’s army discharge papers, and it says he was a member of the Spruce Squadron. I assume he could have been issued one of these guns.
