Interesting point. Not sure I’ll ever understand the 71 but I can see where rifles like this one could have inspired it. With my business background and interest in Winchesters the 71 will always be an intriguing case study. If this weather will ever settle down I may just go shoot mine someday!
According to Bert Hartman this is one of only 4 known 33 Caliber 1886s with a non standard barrel length. it is very rare to find a custom barrel length in this caliber. Winchester stated they did not want to build it in special lengths.

In reviewing my research data, I now have (7) 33 WCF rifles noted with non-standard barrel lengths. I am certain that there are at least a few dozen more of them out there. John Madl more than likely has a reasonably accurate number of them that will letter with a non-standard barrel length.
