Thought I would share some photos I took of the second of two rifles I picked up in Reno. I got this one from Russ Day.

A nice old (made 1895) correct and original special order 45-90 1886 Deluxe that’s been used a little over the years and really cared for. Thanks to Russ and a few members here who looked it over for me. I say special order as it letters with a shotgun rubber butt and 5-cartridge magazine and shipped the same day as arrived in the warehouse.

Kevin,

Beautiful rifle and lots of features. It sure shows well on your deck, and a great backdrop.

Everything really shows well on that gun !Laugh

Kevin,

I agree, fantastic ’86. I love the partial magazines on any model, There are plenty of full and half mags out there. Its the ones in between that get me excited. You have a heck of a start on your collection, with some fine examples that most folks can only dream of, congratulations.

A real stunner!! Sure wasn’t carried much. I haven’t seen a pistol grip Winchester with the ebony inlaid at the bottom of the grip before or it sure looks like ebony. The 1895 forends had a similar inlay.

That is nice. If I had that kind of money, I would probably buy a ranch with it.

Thanks Gary, I feel very fortunate to have picked-up some nice pieces over a short period if time. Of course it’s due to the help and guidance I’ve received from many of you guys.

Thanks, Al. I collect custom knives as well, and found it’s much easier to take a decent photo of a Winchester than a custom knife, especially it the knife blade is damascus or mirror polish.

Thanks Michael. I agree Russ is the “86” man. I also purchased a “86” carbine from him several months ago. He’s a great guy to deal with as well.

I greatly prefer the pistol grip ebony inlay over the plastic cap. I’m not sure what year they went to the cap?

Thanks guys for all your comments.

Mike,

Winchester used ebony wedges in the pistol grip on some of the early Model 1873, 1876, and 1885 Fancy Sporting Rifles.

This is the one in my high-wall (the lower rifle in my signature picture).

Kevin,

Winchester changed the pistol grip to the capped style in the early 1890s.

Did anyone notice the pistol grip has a shadow line detail at the bottom? Is this standard procedure from this era? Later deluxe Winchesters don’t have it. Very nice detail!

Yes, and that shadow line was standard.

Thanks Bert. It is a nice touch for sure.

The deluxe pistol grip 86’s I have seen didn’t have it. Perhaps later production.

I got a little curious as to approx what year Winchester stopped using the ebony inlay on deluxe 1886s and went to the plastic cap. Burt was right as in my searching through the major Winchester websites I found deluxe 1886 rifles with the ebony inlays all the way up through 1895 (3 1895s, including mine), however all I found made after 1895 had the plastic cap pistol grips.
