On GunBroker this week as listed by Lock Stock and Barrel is a later model “94” in the Trapper configuration. Looks to be legit but I’m not too well versed in “Trapper” models. If anyone has the time after the 4th to check it out and render an opinion it might be educational and would certainly be appreciated. The pictures aren’t great—ad says it’s been refinished. It’s late enough to have proper “walnut” stocks w/long forend wood—the pinned front sight looks correct in relation to the barrel band—a saddle ring is present. A few days remain on the auction and it’s already generated some interest. Thanks for all your inputs and expertise. PH

I disagree.
Unless you have exceptionally acute (x-ray) vision, the quality (resolution) of the photos (9, 13, & 22) is not sufficient enough to determine if the front sight post was installed after the fact. Based on its position on the barrel, it appears correct.
The barrel address roll marking in is the correct location for a 16-inch barrel. On the 14″ and 15″ barrels, it was moved forward of the barrel band.

I have seen several Model 1894 and Model 94 16-inch Trappers. The early (Model 1894) usually have the roll marking forward of the rear barrel band, but many of the later (Model 94) 16-inch Trappers have the roll marking located behind the rear barrel band. The Trapper in question is one of the later production Model 94s.

Looks like this all original, REFINISHED, 1894 “Trapper”, sold for $4,132.00! Amazing to me, what a refinished example could go for in the 16 inch barrel configuration.

It’s interesting to watch these auctions. I was in the bidding for this one and watched til the end.
There were 4 serious bidders.
The refinish issue was known it wasn’t hidden or disguised.
If you wanted a legit trapper this was an opportunity—although there were some shortcomings.
You don’t see these available often
It was probably a $2500 value but::::
a fairly high demand
and an obviously short supply……..not a surprising outcome to me.

I’m in agreement with you as far as being a decent representative and that the refinished was made very clear in the listing, as LSB, is very well respected and do a great job with they’re write ups and pictures! IMO!
I also agree with the $2,500.00, as far as being an estimated approximate value for this one.

Thanks for your input Tony. It’s always good to see a few legitimate collectibles come into the general public even if they have a few “warts”. That being said the demand for them seems to be increasing at a moderate pace. Good unmolested originals are getting difficult for me to find. I would have bid a little over 2500 but 4100 was a little too optimistic for me. I do have a good set of period correct walnut SRC stocks that would have spruced it right up. I’d like to have gotten it but there will hopefully be another one come by someday. PH

I Have a Winchester Model 1894 AE 30/30 Made in New Haven Connecticut. It is a 357 with a 16” barrel and a Saddle Ring. The front and rear sight is highlighted in White.the serial number is 6478312. It is like brand new. Don’t have a mark on it. I can’t remember where I got it or how much I paid, but it is an authentic Winchester. Does the 16” barrel make it a trapper?

Anything shorter than the standard length (20-inches) is considered a “Trapper”.
