1873 experts,

I don’t know a lot about model 1873’s, but A local guy has what he calls a rare model 1873 that letters as follows:

serial number 61365, 38-40, Half Octagon, 22″ barrel, 1/2 mag, shotgun butt. plain trigger.

I have not seen the gun but he says it’s all original and has condition. I have no pictures as he said he’s not good with computers, and wants me to come look at it.

Is this a rare variation??

Thanks,

Al

Any 1/2 round barrel other than 24″ is rare. The shotgun butt was standard on 38-40 at that time.

Thanks.  He’s asking $9,500. Seems pretty expensive to me. That’s why I’m asking for some expert help.

I know pictures are important for any reasonable opinions.  I’ve asked for some, and he said he’s not technology savvy.  I’d hate to make a two hour drive to see it if the configuration as I’ve stated above is not rare, or scarce at all.  If you think it’s worth seeing in person and taking pictures myself, then I’ll do that.

Thanks.

You don’t know what he means “has condition”. Ask him to describe the condition. You can always send him pictures of guns in  different states of condition and get close but he will not know if its been refinished or cold blued. Does he have a friend with a smart phone that can take some pictures. I know if it was 2 hours from me and it is high condition I would be on the road.   Its always going to be a gamble because even with pictures, they can deceive you.

It could be worth all of that, IF it is in very nice condition.  It would have to have a lot of condition.  I’m doubting it has that level of condition.  I like the idea of finding someone he knows with a smart phone – that – is not a rarity.

Thanks guys. I spoke with him again and he estimates it’s at least 80%. I’ll take a ride and see for myself.  He said I can take all the prictures I want, so I’ll take pictures and post them on here before I do anything else.

Bob,

How many 22″ 1/2 Octagon Barreled 1873 rifles do you have in your survey?  Do you have sn 61365 in it?

Thanks,

Al

Thanks Bob. Do you recall the condition of it and what it sold for?

Al,

No, I don’t record any remarks unless its a cut barrel, extra holes or missing parts etc.
