Here is a link to Cody Firearms.

http://www.bbhc.org/explore/firearms/firearms-records/

All you need to give them is the Model and serial number. Check the pdf on the web site to make sure your gun is in the records.

The serial number needs to be < 354000 for a Model 1894.

Thanks for the replies. The one gun I want to letter is in the 114k range. It is a Extra Light Weight and I think it has some special features. Need to find out.

Yes, that is what I gathered from Larry Shennum’s book. This gun is the deluxe (not take-down) but it had a Lyman 21 receiver sight on it at one time…….I believe the 21 was the "climin’ Lyman" if not mistaken. I want to see if it letters……..not sure if that was an option from the factory, or if someone added it later. It does not have one on currently but I have one I am thinking about installing. I know the correct number for the 38-55 is "D" but was told the "DA" is basically identical.

I am not good at posting pics but if I find out something will let the forum know.

Thanks for the responses.

Bert,
What exactly does “Lyman combination front and rear” indicate on a Cody information sheet?
Should I assume that means a tang sight and a #5 front sight or could that description apply to other combinations of different Lyman sights.
Thanks, Gene 😕

That is what I always saw when they lettered.

Gene,

It usually means that it has a Lyman No. 5 and a No. 2 tang sight.

I would like to take a minute and let the forum members know about the rifle that I requested help on how to go about getting a letter.. I am very grateful for a member on this site that took me under his wing and helped me out. (94shorties). He is a member of the Cody Firearms Museum and he had some searches left and graciously offered to have them do a search for my gun. He found out my rifle was recieved at the warehouse on 5-3-1901 and left on 5-6-1901. It does not mention about a Lyman 21 but did mention everything else: 38-55 caliber, 1/2 octagon, plain trigger, 1/2 magazine, checkered stock, pistol grip, shotgun butt, rubber butt plate and an oil finish. The intersting thing is it mentions "Drop 2-1/2" which I think is special order. Just the info I was wanting and some time I will try to post some pictures. Thanks Paul for being so gracious and helping a new member out.
Sincerly, John Ulrich
