Hi guys, I just met another guy with a 94 Win SRC identical to my SRC 30-30.
Both rifles have a silver recvr, lever, etc. Even buttplates.
My rifle is a 1907, his is earlier because of serial no.
Is this normal? Are they nickel and don’t hold bluing well?
My rifle is not at all original, so I was going to reblue it, as I use it to hunt coyotes, and want to rid the silver shine.
thanks for any input!

Hello Terry,

While nickel plated rifles could be special ordered from Winchester it is far more likely that after 106 years the original bluing that had been on the rifle has worn off or been removed along with some rust at some time. It is very common for the receivers to have more wear than the barrel since this is the carry point of the rifle with regard to balance.

Thanks Michael,
As I carried it out in the woods today, I did realize that is the carrying point. Balance is holding the recvr. Makes sense why the bluing is gone. It has 7 notches on the bottom forearm, and 21 notches on the the front underside of the forearm. The rifle came from Idaho, and the previous owner said that it had taken 7 elk, and 21 mulees. Has a lot of carrying history.
Thanks Terry
PS it has a marbles front sight, is this original or added on?

The other thing is the metal of the receiver does not hold bluing as well as the barrel and tube.

No, that is not normal, and it does not mean that his Model 94 is older than yours. All Winchester Model 1894 (94) Rifles and Carbines were made with a serial number.

Terry,

Marbles sights were very commonly used by Winchester on the Model 1894s made in the years 1902 – 1919.

TerryR; Years back winchester had a terrible time with the blueing
holding to the Metal on certain Models and the Model 94 was surely one
of them. The finish sort of just flaked off, that became to be known as
flaking. Some of the guns found their way to a new finish job but it
is not all that uncommon to find one that has had the finish completely
removed either by buffing or chemical and never refinished. Usually
you will see them listed as (IN THE WHITE) I have one of these that a
guy was going to refinish and after the remaval of the original finish
he liked what it looked like and decided to leave it alone as he was also
afraid that the refinish would not hold as well. AT a distance my looks
to be nickel plated but up close you can tell there is no plating.
