I picked up a model 52 today ,serial number 972. New BB says 1923. Proofhouse says 1922 but barrel says 1920. Any accurate databases for these yet? Also, any reason for a thread 1/4" hole between trigger guard and magazine? It looks to have been there its whole life but I haven’t had one quite this early. Thanks.
Your receiver was serial numbered on Nov. 20th, 1920. I would imagine it was assembled shortly thereafter. The only accurate source for s/n’s is the polishing records. There is a copy of these records in the Houze book on 52’s.
Your threaded hole in triggerguard was most likely for a palmrest attachment. There were numerous styles/brands and many "home made" vesions used through out the years on the 52. The hole is not factory. An early rifle such as yours should have no holes in the guard except for one at each end of trigger bow for wood screws and the one at the front end for attachment to receiver.
