I am looking at a win 1906 that has the rear sight in a strange place. It is mounted right at 4" to the center of the mounting hole from the receiver like my other ones are but this one is covering up some of the labeling. Is it normal for one to be like this???
Thanks
Steve

The address is coming up a little blurry for me but it appears to be the last address used for the 06’s (usually above 850.000). If it is, there is a picture in Schwing’s book (p. 270) that shows a different type of sight in the dovetail. He doesn’t reference the sight so I don’t know if it was a late sight that was standard or if it was a special ordered sight. On page 278 there is virtually the same photo as yours but the sight base appears to just touch the top of the WINCHESTER stamp. I checked mine but they are of the 1906 stamping. Check to see if there is evidence of the other type of sight. If there isn’t I would say it’s normal by looking at the photo on p. 278.

That barrel address does not fit the criteria of a 1917 rifle according to Schwing’s book. The only address that looks like that is the 06-7 which was the last one used and will appear on very late rifles assembled from available parts. He says that this address suggests that these 06’s were assembled after WW II and that these late Model 06 barrels are crowned on the muzzle. His last line on the subject is: A few of these Model 06s with this 06-7 barrel marking were seen on rifles without tang markings which is further evidence that they were fitted to Model 62 receivers. My opinion is that if the owner says it’s a 1917 serial number it’s probably has a replacement barrel.

😕
Ok he said the serial number starts with 522xxx with a B. He says the barrel is crowned. The bolt, by the way has the 1906 screws rather than the 62A pins. When you say the address that looks like that is 06-7, do you mean 1906 and 07 barrels left over, and then assembled much later??
Thanks much for all the info. I am trying to decide if I want this rifle or not.

That serial # is a 1917 one. The 06-7 is the type of address. The different address stampings are designated from 06-1 to 06-7. That serial number should have a Type 06-4 or 06-5 address like this.
MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN.
CONN. U.S.A. PAT. JUNE 26. 88 DEC.6. 92. NOV. 27. 06 MAY 30. 1911.
The above address is followed by –MOD. 1906. in Type 06-4 or –MOD.06 in Type 06-5
The correct barrel for that serial # should not be crowned. By the information and picture you have posted I am of the opinion that the barrel is a replacement.
