I have a Win 65 ser# 1001191 , which I believe predates production by about a year ? The strangest thing about it is the irregular loading port opening . It looks like it was hand done and file fitted in places, with the most obvious irregularities being cuts on the 2 longest sides (horizontal) at the rear end of the opening where they should blend tangent with the large radius, but have dug in instead.
I always wondered about this and have rejected my origional thought that it was" Bubba ed" by a "gunsmith",because what could have been the intended purpose? , and it recently struck me that it may be an early prototype of the model? With the most obvious question being why woulnt they have used a standard 32-20 model 92 receiver from stock , with a properly finished loading port ?
I know I should get a camera (dont even have a cellphone ) because a pic would show it better, but has anyone ever seen a rough cutout loading port ?
Your Model 65 is a 1933 vintage rifle. In my ongoing research survey, I have documented (12) other Model 65 rifles with serial numbers < 1001191. In total, I have surveyed (232) thus far.
In regards to your question about the loading gate, I am having a hard time drawing a mental picture of it. I do not believe that it is prototype though.
