Were all Win short barrel rifles for 1873 & 1892 pre-1899 with an octagon barrel special ordered ? Were many made ?

For the 73’s the short barreled rifles were special order. There was a bunch of 20" rifles that were called border guns. A lot more guns were ordered with longer than normal barrels than shorter.

The most popular "short barrel" for the Model 1892 was by far the 20 inch length. They were made by the thousands in both octagon and round barrel. Half octagon variations were also made but are far less common.

I’m not sure that a short barreled 73 was special ordered, agreed it wasn’t a standard catalogue item, but they made thousands in the 14-22 inch range.
