I have an 1885 highwall that was returned to the factory in 1915. The Winchester letter lists the term "Saget" used in the description of what the rifle had done to it? Does anybody know what Saget means or what would have been involved? Could it be a European term used by an immigrant factory worker?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bob
Julian Saget was a gunsmith in New Orleans from 1841 to 1886, and was succeeded by his sons, Charles and Arthur Saget, who operated a gun shop into the twentieth century. They went from manufacturing and importing percussion firearms to retailing sporting arms and accessories in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, including Winchesters. There was quite a market for target rifles in New Orleans during this period also.
This is the only connection I know of between the name Saget and Winchester.
Just a possible clue.
I heard back from Bert and he graciously sent me a copy of the ledger records on my rifle. We both agree that the word may not be Saget but can’t figure out what it is. Will try to figure out what it may be and report back if something turns up. I’m not a member of any photo website and really don’t want to join so I can’t do an attachment. Bob
Bob,
If you send it along to me, I can post it for you.
Sincerely,
Maverick
