😆 I recently purchased a pair of Winchester rifles which are very professionally set up to share the same scope. The detachable part of the Griffin & Howe mount is movable from a 1940 Model 70 to a 1949 Model 74. The serial #’s for both rifles are nicely stamped on the movable portion. The older gentleman I bought this from said the scope would then be sited correctly for either rifle. Workmanship is excellent and both rifles are in 98-99% condition. Inlet into the bottom of both stocks is a round brass plate with a large "S" and the inscription Seabrook N.J.
There is a town of Seabrook N.J. but this would appear to be the logo of the gunsmith who did this interesting scope mounting work.
Can anyone shed any light on this pair of winchesters and or the gunsmith?
It doesn’t seem very likely that the brass plates refer to whoever mounted the scopes–more likely they refer to a previous owner.
The M70 was made in 1940. Its scope was likely mounted in the 1940s or 1950s. At that time there were gunsmiths in many towns all across the country. Many of them could install G&H sidemounts. Most of the small gunshops and gunsmiths are long gone. It seems to me that tracking down whoever did the work on your rifles would be very difficult–and your only hope would be information from previous owners.
