I have a 1950 Winchester Model 70 30-06 rifle.
My question is what would have been some popular scopes of the day?

Tom,

Based on what I have seen over the years, the Weaver scopes were the most common.

Unertl’s were popular during that time as well, along with Litschert’s, and the Fecker’s were still popular too.

The Bausch & Lomb "Balvar" and "Balfor" were very popular in 50’s as well. These look like conventional internal adjustment scopes, however they use an external adjustment mount similar to the "Stith" that was popular in the 40’s. These scopes were very well made with excellent optics.

I never realized the old Weaver’s were made in El Paso, TX. I see the Vintage Weaver K-series scopes on E-Bay.
Thanks again for all the help….

I have this 30-’06 from the time period you are looking at and what I think is a very early Weaver K4 with the exposed adjustments. It also has the range finding reticule. I think the glass is very good yet to my eyes. I do not know when the Weaver detachable top mounts came out. I have no idea if the set up is original to the gun or not. Very slight wear marks indicate it did have a standard rear sight on the barrel at one time. I wanted to have one scoped bolt gun to hunt with and this is the only bolt action and scoped rifle I have. Probably not serious collector material here. I am enjoying shooting the hell out of it however.

Leupold dates to 1907 as a company. Their first commercial rifle scope was the Plainsman first offered in 1947 its big claim to fame was being filled with Nitrogen to prevent fogging. Buy the mid 1950’s Leupold had a number of highly thought of scopes on the market.

Weaver started his business in Kentucky, but moved to El Paso shortly afterwards. The Lyman Alaskan and some of the early and better Weavers could be mounted with the Stith Streamline mount w/o drilling any extra holes. This mount came out in 1950.
