Greetings and Happy Easter,
I am new to the forum, and have a Winchester Model 70 question. Well, I am pretty sure it’s a Model 70 but there are a couple of major differences in my receiver. The SN is 115568, which by all means should be a 1949 production receiver. But, the bolt (which is SN matched to the gun) has only 2 lugs (similar to a Rem Model 700 bolt). The extractor is at the bolt face. There is no safety on the shroud, rather a ‘thumb’ safety on the right side of the tang. There is no notch cut out of the upper rear of the receiver, which allows clearance for the top of a normal Mod 70 bolt. Also, the spring loaded bolt stop is not there, nor was there ever a slot machined for it. The bolt release is standard. The barrel is a post 64 in .308, and I believe the stock is post 64 and has no floorplate.
I am completely stumped. Looking for your expertise.
Pictures can be sent of course.
Thanks in advance. Bill

Bill,

Does it have a "G" in front of the serial number?

Hi Bert,
no it doesn’t. Just 115568. And the proof is near the front hole, instead of near the wood line like a regular Mod 70. Also absent is the wavy engraving on the top of the receiver (my ’53 Mod 70 has that wavy etching/engraving).
Cheers

Pictures please. The earliest model 70 I have ever seen with a push feed bolt(post 64 style) is a 1958 single shot Olympic rifle which was built for the AAMU under special contract. It also has a massive rectangular receiver and special double set trigger. I have an idea you have either a post 64 rifle or possibly some type of "homebuilt" rifle.
Some good close up pictures will help immensely.

All just wanted to thank Steve for his research. He determined that my rifle is a Winchester model 670 with a sliding safety. What throws us off though is the SN, which has no "G" suffix, only 115568. Must be an early Model 670? At any rate, now the only question is can I put a pre model 64 barrel on it. Any help in that field is greatly appreciated.
Great forum!

The barrel-receiver threads are the same for both guns.Winchester did the same threads for the 88 & 100’s as well.I put a post 64 M70 barrel in 243 on an 88 action.Just needed headspacing and the stock barrel chanel opened up for the larger barrel dia.Your good to go putting a pre 64 barrel on but will need the stock barrel opened up.

Hey Guys,

I have a model 670A 30-06 Serial # G203472.  I saw where Bert wrote “Does it have a “G” in front of the serial number? and decided to post on here.  I cant find any information on this serial number.  Is there something special about the “G”?

Mainly I was wondering if I can buy a model 70 stock from whatever year this gun matches and replace it with the model 70.

Any information on the model is appreciated.  Thank you. Chad
