To all,

I have decided to begin cataloging the caliber and barrel configurations of for the entire the Model 61 production run. While chewing off a small, certain unique style may be easier it ends up letting too much good and usefull data go past you in the hope of somebody else getting it. I may as well enter it while I have it on the computer screen.

Sooooo…. Open up the safes and please send me the serial number, caliber stamp information for the rifle and the barrel shape style. No photos are necessary for this, just a simple list will do. You can either PM me or send to my email at [email protected] Hopefully, this work will shed a tiny bit of light on the overall production percentages of the Model 61 and make a small compliment to the work done in Schwing’s book.

I put my dozen rifles on the list and picked up 43 more last night just looking on Gunbroker and GI. There are lots of past auctions to go back and dig into also.

Wish me luck
Michael

This can be a very effective way of finding out data on a specific model that has variations.

One of my other hobbies is collecting cameras Specifically Canon Manual Focus cameras WWII to 1992.

One of the guys in the circle I travel took it upon himself to start this same kind of data collection with a few models of the cameras.

We now know within 50 cameras exactly when the Canon model EF changed from a Fesnel type focusing screen to one with a split image rangefinder style.

We know at what point one of the strap loops thats known to break was changed from Polycarbonate to steel in the T90 model.

Little things collectors obsess over.

I only wish I had a model 61 to send you info on.

Michael,

I just picked up a very nice model 61 in 22 mag R.F., serial number 331543. It has an A below the serial number. Can you tell me the years they produced the 61 in .22 mag R.F. caliber?, and also when did they start using phillips head screws for the butt plate?

Thanks,

Al

Hello Al

Your rifle is a 1962 vintage. The 22 Mag Rim Fire was introduced in 1960.
I am not tracking any change in screw types for the butt plate nor have I read anything regarding a difference. I have 3 1960 vintage magnums and will take a look a them tomorrow during the day.

Thanks for adding your rifle.

Michael,

Thanks for checking. I saw a later model 37 shotgun that had philips head screws on the butt plate also.

Al,

No phillips head screws.
And, I now have 1012 rifles in the survey. If anyone has one and has yet to contact me please do so.

This survey is turning into an expensive project!!! I was just minding my own business trying to harmlessly collect data when these three rifles came up for auction. I did not have a round barrel short variation in my collection, nor a shot only counterbore rifle. Well now I do. In fact two counterbores since I figured just the one would be lonely. More and better pics to follow after they arrive.

3 questions about your new acquisitions:

1. What is the bore diameter of the shot-only guns?

2. Is there any sort of choke in the barrels?

I remember shooting a Remington bolt action (510?) single shot at small clay birds as a kid, but I don’t remember much about any of the guns.

3. Is the Short-only rifle drilled & tapped for any sort of sights other than the open rear sight on the barrel?

I have a long-term interest in rifles chambered exclusively for .22 Short and in the accuracy of relatively modern .22 Short ammo. I am always looking for willing participants.

What would a model 61 be worth if the serial number was under 10 in 98% condition……
